Emmanuel Howard Park United Church
Gospel workshop. Out of the collective tribulations of the black experience in North America has grown one of the worlds most joyful and enriching forms of music. In this workshop we will explore and sing some of the roots of Afro American gospel music. We will begin back in the 1800's tracing various roots and branches. We will look at the work of Thomas A. Dorsey, considered the father of modern gospel music. The participants will learn some of the music from the so called "golden age of gospel" in the 40's, 50's and 60's including songs by some of the great gospel "divas" like Mahalia Jackson, Marion Williams, Clara Ward and the gospel quartets like the Soul Stirrers, the Gospel Hummingbirds and the Blind Boys. The program will include examples of work by some of the great choir leaders and composers like Rev. James Cleveland. No experience is necessary, but a willingness to sing and a sense of openness will be invaluable. Reservations required. Limited space available.

Ken's Gospel Workshop.

"The Way We Feel: A Celebration of The Songs Of Gordon Lightfoot". This annual concert was first created and produced by Aengus Finnan & Jory Nash in 2003 and this will be the 7th annual installment of the show. The concept is simple: Invite about 10 Folk/Roots artists to each perform 2 Lightfoot songs of their choice in a sit-down concert setting. Add a fantastic house band and amiable host and the result is a wonderful, celebratory evening. While the performing artists change somewhat from year to year the spirit of the written song and the acknowledgement of the impact of Gordon Lightfoot's music remain unifying yearly themes.

Back By Popular Demand! The first concert of Ken's 2009 Gospel series at Hugh's Room features special guests Sharon Riley, John Mays, Bucky Berger, Nicole Edwards and Ben Whiteley.
Toronto's own international gospel recording artist SHARON RILEY is applauded for her GRAMMY and JUNO award winning work with FAITH CHORALE (a 35 voice gospel choir). She has an incredible, rich alto voice which is infused with sincerity and musical skills.
Blues lead vocalist JOHN MAYS is well-known for his work with the 2008 JUNO Award Winning Blues group FATHEAD. Raised in Georgia, John has had a storied career that began in the Southern gospel tradition, crossing over into Doo-Wop, R&B and Blues plus a memorable stint with the Godfather of Soul James Brown.
The talented and strongly in demand BUCKY BERGER currently drums with FATHEAD. Bucky's rhythms have backed up, either live or in the studio, a who's who of Canadian and international artists, such as Tom Paxton, John Hammond, The Campbell Brothers, Blind John Davis, David Wilcox, Chiliwack, Rough Trade, Ken Whiteley, Raffi and Mr Dressup, to name only a few.
Yukon-based NICOLE EDWARDS blazed her musical trail as an unplugged songstress with a voice equal parts grit, smoke and confection. The ability to sink her voice to the low end of the musical register and rocket it back up to the top of the scale has served her well. Her third CD, Sparkin’, is a collection of jazz standards.
Accompanying everyone on bass will be Ken’s son, BEN WHITELEY. Currently attending University of Toronto's prestigious music faculty, Ben can also be found around town playing in the group FLASHLIGHT RADIO, with Suzy Wilde. Their sound combines Ben's instrumental talents on standup bass and guitar with Suzie's captivating voice and lyrics. Childhood friends, both have been involved in performing, recording and songwriting since they were very young and have received a first hand education from their respective parents, Ken Whiteley and Nancy White. Together Ben and Suzie have created a brand of roots music that is very much their own.
KEN WHITELEY is a prolific songwriter, a gifted and versatile guitarist and mandolinist, and a powerful singer! His musical cohorts refer to him as a "playing encyclopedia" for his depth and range of styles, covering everything from folk to blues to gospel and children's music. This past November 2008, Whiteley was inducted into the Mariposa Folk Festival's Hall of Fame and was recently nominated for another Canadian Folk Music and Maple Blues with A Feeling awards. His recording "Gospel Music Makes Me Feel Alright!" continues to be a best-seller.

Songs of Hope: A Benefit Concert for the Ministries of St. John’s! Featuring Ken Whiteley, Tim Elliott, Anne Lederman, Jaroslav Czerwinec, Glory Glory Hallelujah! Fun for the entire family; a very children friendly concert. *Jaroslav Czerwinec began to study the accordion at the age of 8 and has been playing continually since then. Versatility is the name of his game. While his roots are in Ukrainian music, he enjoys playing many different kinds of music, from reggae through hymns to Scottish Country dancing. Over the past twenty years, he has played frequently with Cowboy Junkies: he was with them for the Trinity Session, which first brought them to prominence, and most recently played with them at their Trinity Session Revisited concert at Massey Hall last year. *Rev. Tim Elliott is a Toronto-based jazz pianist, Anglican priest and vocational consultant, Tim, who is married to CBC radio news anchor Judy Maddren, has always mixed his two vocations - music and the priesthood. He partly financed his studies at the General Theological Seminary in New York, N.Y. by working as a lounge pianist and folk singer. After a stint in the private sector, he served for more than 25 years as a parish priest in and around Toronto. Then, in 1999, he co-founded (with percussionist Brian Barlow) Jazz Vespers at his parish of Christ Church Deer Park in Toronto. That taste of working with music led Tim to leave daily parish ministry to explore his music, which he combines with a consulting career, working particularly with clergy, professionals and executives in transition. A popular conference speaker and workshop leader, he focuses on jazz, spirituality, vocation, and creativity. Tim has a doctor of ministry degree from Trinity College and the Toronto School of Theology in the dynamics of work and vocation, and is the author of Clarity and Courage: Life as an Improvised Journey (Creber Monde, 2006). Tim has release two solo piano CDs All the Things You Are and New Every Morning - Hymn Tunes and Variations. * Glory Glory Hallelujah! Comprising Mike Wood, Laura Wood, Leah Hunter and Andrew Huang, Glory Glory Hallelujah formed in early 2008 through a shared desire to play traditional hymns with modern arrangements. Before this official inception, they often led worship together at the downtown church Freedomize Toronto, and continue to do so. They released their first album O Christmas in December 2008, featuring twelve Christmas songs. *Originally from Manitoba, Anne Lederman is a fiddler, singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist strongly rooted in several musical traditions-Celtic, Metis and French-Canadian, Klezmer & Balkan, classical and jazz. Over her 30 year career, Anne has worked with bands Muddy York, The Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band, Siykha, and LOKA and such artists as Harry Hibbs, Margaret Christl, Don Freed, Holly Cole, Theresa Tova, Tom Leadbeater and Garnet Rogers, among others. She has her own band, Fiddlesong, and also performs with Njacko Backo, Urban Mermaid, and a new fiddle-based trio, Eh? She has recorded four CDs under her own name: Not a Mark in This World, 7 Cats, Come From Every Way and Fiddlesong. Anne also composes and performs for theatre, most recently, Roseneath Theatre's Spirit Horse. Her own play, Spirit of the Narrows, about the Metis fiddle tradition, was featured at the Blyth Theatre Festival in 2004 and 2005. *Tom Leighton is well known for his energetic performances and his ability to play several instruments at the same time. As half of Haines & Leighton, he has three CD's with Borealis Records, including the award-winning Hand To Hand. Tom teaches part of each year at Wexford C.I. School for the Arts, performs regularly with Conrad Kipping and Anne Lederman and is currently recording his first instrumental recording.
