Emmanuel Howard Park United Church

Ken's Gospel Workshop. Out of the collective tribulations of the black experience in North America has grown one of the worlds most joyful and enriching forms of music. In this workshop we will explore and sing some of the roots of Afro American gospel music. We will begin back in the 1800's tracing various roots and branches. We will look at the work of Thomas A. Dorsey, considered the father of modern gospel music. The participants will learn some of the music from the so called "golden age of gospel" in the 40's, 50's and 60's including songs by some of the great gospel "divas" like Mahalia Jackson, Marion Williams, Clara Ward and the gospel quartets like the Soul Stirrers, the Gospel Hummingbirds and the Blind Boys. The program will include examples of work by some of the great choir leaders and composers like Rev. James Cleveland. No experience is necessary, but a willingness to sing and a sense of openness will be invaluable. Reservations required. Limited space available.
