Last Sunday Gospel Matinee in Toronto…

Last Sunday Gospel Matinee of this season!

I am quite excited about a very unique last show of this Sunday Gospel series. Tabby Johnson, Kim Doolittle and Njacko Backo all bring something special to the mix. Tabby Johnson has a legendary status that stretches back to when she skipped high school to audition and land a spot in the original Toronto cast of Hair! many years ago. Since then she has taken her amazing voice and incredible, creative energy to stages, studios and television shows around the world. I first became aware of Kim Doolittle when she sang with Jeff Healey for many years. She is another powerhouse singer, but also with a tender side. When I heard her version of Amazing Grace, I knew she’d be perfect for one of these events. Originally from the East Coast, she too has taken her music around the world. Njacko Backo brings a more distant part of the world to us here in Toronto. Originally from Cameroon, he is a master singer, percussionist and kalimba player (the African thumb piano). Njacko has received nominations from the Junos and the Canadian Folk Music Awards. His engaging style and positive energy have made him a favorite where ever he goes. Also making his first appearance will be Andrew Downing, a fabulous bassist, composer and arranger. He is also a neighbour of mine and we’ve worked together in the studio before but this will be our first official live collaboration. – Ken Whiteley
