December News….

UP NEXT… Ken, Amoy Levy and David Wall join the gospel and chancel choirs for the annual Christmas Eve candlelight service at Emmanuel Howard Park United Church in Toronto (Dec. 24). This is a beautiful family oriented service. The previous six years it has been standing room only, so arrive early to get a good seat. The service begins at 6:30 p.m.

NEW CD… The Light of Christmas just received a very nice review in the TBS’ Maple Blues Newsletter. Among such nice quotes as “sheer genius” and “you won’t be sitting still”, the review ends with: “The enthusiasm and dedication that Ken and the band bring to these songs will grab you from the opening of “Oh Lord, I Wonder” and keep you long after “Amen” has faded away.”

This recording features a marvelous collection of new Christmas originals that range from the exciting ska sounds of “The Baby Leapt In The Womb” to the heart-tugging “I Can’t Imagine Christmas Without You”. It is a vocal rich recording that in addition to Ken’s soul stirring performances includes singers David Wall, The Levy Sisters (Amoy & Ciceal), Hayley Gene Penner and Ken’s niece Jenny Whiteley. In fact the album is brimming with fellow Whiteley’s including brother Chris, son Ben, nephews Dan and Jesse and a cover painting by his father, Ronald Whiteley. Ken first began thinking about making a Christmas album back in the late 1970’s with the Original Sloth Band. “Santa Claus Blues” and “Last Month Of The Year” are from that repertoire. Ken has produced Christmas music by a number of other artists over the years and “There Was A Little Baby” (Raffi) and the Ken Whiteley orginial “Christmasy Kind Of Day” (Fred Penner) are from those endeavors. The heart of the recording are Ken’s new songs. From the socially conscious “Daily Bread” and the title track “The Light Of Christmas” to the compelling gospel of “Hallelujah, A Child Is Born”, they resonate with a rich, inclusive spirituality. This recording project is supporting the Daily Bread Food Bank; 10% of all CD sales are going to support their important work in Toronto and across the GTA. A special thank you to Richard Carson, Holmes Hooke and all the wonderful folks at Hugh’s Room, Mina Cicconi and Erica Franklin from The Daily Bread Food Bank, and lastly to our friends and family who celebrated the launch of this CD with us at Hugh’s Room.
